Types of Hep C

Hep-C-Virus

The virus can be classified into six different genotypes and each one divided into many subtypes.

A genotype is a classification made based on the RNA (its gene structure) of the Hep C virus.

Usually a person is infected only with one type of virus genotype. Clearly identifying the type of Hep C virus genotype a person is carrying is critical for the doctor to know in advance in order for him or her to prescribe the right course of prescription medication therapy.

Some virus genotypes are more aggressive than others, hence, the chance of cure is more certain or uncertain than in the case of other virus genotype infections.

As with many different kinds of viruses, the Hep C virus is able to mutate reasonably quickly and become resistant to certain medications. This is the reason why it is very important to diagnose the disease and the virus genotype very early and to follow the prescribed medication treatment very carefully. The good news is that it is NOT common for one virus genotype to change into another virus genotype once a person is infected.
