What is Interferon and how it affects the Hepatitis C virus?

Interferon is a protein that is naturally produced in the body. Recently some research has shown that interferon has influence over the growth and function of certain cells, especially those related to the body’s immune system which helps the body to fight against certain infections and disease processes.

This protein has been synthesized and is now available as a prescription medication under the generic name of Interferon Alfa 2-b and is used for the treatment of many diseases including the cancer and various types of viral hepatitis including the hepatitis C virus.

Interferon Alfa 2-b is prescribed and use should be monitored by your doctor since many side effects can occur, some of them serious. The drug is available in many forms and presentations under different manufacturer brands.

Today some new and exciting drugs to treat viral Hepatitis C are now available in the market. These new antiviral medications can help the body of a Hep C virus infected person fight the menacing virus. These new drugs can be and have been used successfully in conjunction with Interferon Alfa 2-b in the fight against the Hep C virus.  Keep in mind that this combination therapy should be done under close supervision of your physician.
